Speaking at the Northern Youth Drug Abuse Prevention Forum 2026, held at the Radatch Memorial Centre, the Minister emphasized that drug-related activities will not be tolerated under his leadership.

The event which was organized by the Executive Director of Brightpath Global Foundation, Queen Tuunteiya Drahamani, brought together stakeholders to address the growing concern of substance abuse among the youth.

In his address, Hon. He noted that although the withdrawal of the previously deployed “Black Maria” operations posed a challenge, the Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has introduced a new initiative known as “Red Maria” to sustain and intensify the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

The Minister highlighted several measures being implemented by the Northern Regional Security Council to combat the increasing misuse of tramadol and other substances, particularly in Tamale.

These include strengthened intelligence gathering to identify and prosecute trafficking networks, increased targeted patrols and enforcement operations to disrupt illegal distribution, and enhanced coordination among security agencies for rapid and effective response.

He also underscored the importance of community involvement, urging residents, parents, and youth groups to play an active role by reporting suspicious activities responsibly.

“When our youth are consumed by drug abuse, society pays a heavy price. This forum is not just another meeting, it is a collective response to a growing menace,” he said.

Hon. Nburidiba further emphasized that the fight against drug abuse cannot be won by government alone.

He called for a united front involving traditional authorities, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions, the private sector, and families to safeguard the future of the youth.
